General

  1. Location: we are in room 2F13 for both lectures and exercises. When working independently on exercises you can also use other areas or home depending on the type of work. The course will combine lectures, live coding, and offline support via Slack and Studio based activities.

  2. Thursdays: currently, Thursdays are reserved for deeper assignment work as opposed to the daily exercises. However, we will still start and end the day together (physically if possible) to bookend your independent studio work time. I will be available for office hours (sign up is above) and on slack.

  3. Slack: this is a quick messaging channel that we will use to communicate about updates, share links, programming issues and so on. It will be monitored regularly during class hours but it may take longer to answer questions outside of these hours.

    1. Announcements: I will send important updates on the “all-creative-data-vis” channel on slack
    2. Code: when programming independently, during studio work time, feel free to use slack to post about programming questions in the code channel
    3. Exercises & assignments: submit your assignment deliverables using the assignments channel in slack. Optionally and as part of the first day’s assignment, set up your own documentation place. In that case you can send a link to your documentation when delivering on slack.
  4. Materials: for each day, I have made notes in the schedule. The code notes are the most extensive, but the design notes are also useful (mostly links) and exercises notes are likely good reminders for you if you forget the expectations for the afternoon activities

  5. Email Policy: I typically respond very quickly to emails during daily work hours but can’t always promise to get back to you right away. You will hear from me within a maximum of 48 hours (so please note: “night before” emails may not get answered in time).

  6. Absences, Lateness and Life: There are several reasons we want you to arrive to class regularly, on time, and stay for the entirety of class:

Important: if “life happens,” i.e., personal issues that lead to lateness or absence, email me. I can help you much more effectively if I am aware of any issues you are having in the moment.

Important: if you fall behind, email me ([email protected] or [email protected]). We can work a strategy to get you back on track. You will not be in trouble for asking for help.
